Step 1
Learn not to take everything personally. Your boss' s bad mood may have very little to do with you. If he is stressed out because of something else, you make get that stress directed at you. Think to yourself - this is not about me, but I can help this person feel better.

Step 2
Don't join in with the loud urgent way your boss my be talking to you. Think about your breathing and keep it calm and slow. If you keep calm this will help him also become calm. He may also use that calm moment to hear himself being so harsh and get a clue that it sounds unreasonable.

Step 3
Let you boss know that you will look into the question right away. This can stop the raging by letting him know you are willing to help the problem get fixed. If he is stressed out, your sympathetic listening can make him feel supported and maybe he will go away while you sort out the problem.

Step 4
If you find that you did something wrong to create a problem, think of how you can fix it. Be brave and apologize to your boss. Calmly tell him the solution you have come up with and that you will take care of it right away. Sometimes this will bring a stopping point to the stressed out mood or at least get him to focus on somebody else for a while.

If your boss' s bad moods keep grinding on you day after day you may consider planning on looking for a new job. You are responsible for your happiness, to feel good and be in a place that supports that. Don't ever leave a job out of an angry moment. Make a plan and you will have a smooth transition.
