Fish as pets can become just as dear to you as a dog or cat, but when they fall ill or get injured it's not as easy to take them to the vet. Here are some ways to treat them at home and hopefully save your fishy friends.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Breeder tank
  • Aquarium salt
  • Net
  • Fish medication
  1. Step 1

Determine what is wrong with your fish. Is it a fish disease like ick or fungus. Or has your fish been injured by rubbing against decorations or being bitten by other fish?

  2. Step 2

If your fish is sick, go to the pet store as soon as possible to pick up the appropriate medication. There are medications specifically made to treat most common diseases, or you can get a general treatment like Lifguard by Jungle that will treat all of the above.

  3. Step 3

If your fish is injured, but not showing signs of disease, then place a small floating container called a breeder tank inside your tank and net the fish into it. This will isolate him from further injury.

  4. Step 4

If there is a disease present in your tank, treat it as soon as possible. Don't simply isolate the fish if it has obvious signs of disease. It's easiest to leave it in the tank and treat the whole thing to prevent the disease from being spread to your other fish or taking root in the gravel to pop up again later.

  5. Step 5

For an injured or sick fish, it is always a good idea to increase oxygen levels in your tank, raise the temperature, and add aquarium salt. You can add an air pump to help with oxygen. Even freshwater fish need a small amount of salt to be comfortable and combat disease.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try to have a general fish medicine on hand to treat your tank in case of emergencies.
  • Follow the directions on any medication you use and do not add aquarium salt if the package advises against it.
