Most travelers to the U.S.must obtain a visa. There are several specific types of visas. The process for obtaining a visa includes application forms and interviews as well as the collection and cross-checking of names in a highly sophisticated inter-agency database.     Get an application. While on your visit to embassy you can get an application. Be sure to ask any questions you have. Be sure to ask what fees are required, when they are required and how much they are.

    Get your documentation ready. You will need a valid passport, the application, any fees and proof that they were paid, documents to support your employment and financial status. Depending on your country, you may need additional forms and information.

    Submit your application, passport, and supporting documents to the embassy or consulate. Your application will then be reviewed by the consular officer in your country and, in many cases, by officials in Washington, D.C. For most applicants, it will take a few weeks for the visa to be issued.
