Remove and replace damaged wood shingles promptly.

Wood shingles crack easily when dry so hose the roof down well the day before you do your repairs.

From Quick Guide: Make a Foreclosure a Home
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

To remove a damaged wood shingle, use a chisel and split it in pieces. Pull out the pieces as they splinter.

Use a hack saw to cut through the nails that held it in place. These will be under the shingles in the layer above.

Cut the nails flush with the roof deck.

  2. Step 2

Line up the replacement shingle and trim it to allow about 1/4 inch of space on each side.

Slip it gradually in place. Do this by holding a block of wood against the bottom edge and tap gently.

  3. Step 3

To hold the new shingle in place, drive two nails into it just below the butt edge of the shingle above.

  4. Step 4

If your roof is leaking, as an emergency measure, you can drive a piece of metal flashing under a damaged shingle OR shake using a block of wood as above.

Cut the flashing to extend under the two adjoining shingles. It should also extend below the damaged shingle.
