Step 1
Spend Some Time Reading Other Personal Ads. Look in your local newspaper or online at dating agencies and sites. Spend some time reading the ads that people have placed. Remember the ones that sound really terrible to you – they will serve as an important lesson! Also, think about the ones that are nice, attractive and sound great. They will also be an important lesson. This will help you realize how silly some ads can sound and just how great others can be. This is a good first step for learning how to write a great personal ad.
-
Step 2
Think about What You Want. It’s important for you to know what you want because anyone reading your personal ad needs to be able to determine that. In order for you to convey the message properly, you need to know it yourself. Are you looking for romance, a friendship, a long-term relationship or marriage? By really thinking about what you want, you can write your ad to attract others who are looking for the same thing.
-
Step 3
Avoid Cheesy and Tacky Lines. The last thing you want your ad to do is inspire some eye-rolling from the individuals who read it. For instance, if you feel the urge to write something like, “Come take a bite,” or, “The man of your dreams,” – don’t! These lines are cheesy, tacky and silly. No one reading it will be able to take you seriously. Avoid ‘lines’ at all – just write from your heart and be honest. That’s all it takes to create an awesome personal ad and attract your true love!
-
Step 4
Create a Draft of Your Ad. Write a draft of your ad, making sure to remember those good and bad ads you looked at with step 1. Also, make sure your ad represents you and exactly what you’re looking for. Spend some time on this, because it’s the first impression people will get from your ad that is so important. You don’t get a chance to walk up, shake their hand and introduce yourself. That’s what your ad will be doing for you, so spend a few extra minutes getting it right.
-
Step 5
Check for Errors
If you don’t want to end up on some website with the ‘funniest personal ads ever,’ make sure you check yours for errors. Since most personal ads aren’t that long or complicated, it shouldn’t be too difficult. Step away from the ad you’re writing for a few hours and then come back and read it again. If you have a fresh eye, you will be more likely to catch errors. -
Step 6
That’s it! By using these 5 steps, you can be sure that you will not write a punk personal ad and that your ad will be great. Good luck!
