Step 1
Choose roofing cement that comes in cartridges that will fit a caulking gun.
If you have shingles that have been curled by the wind, use your gun to put a few dabs of cement under the shingle.
Weight briefly until the cement holds.
If the shingle has curled enough to be torn, use your cement and then hold the torn edges in place with roofing nails.
Using a brush, cover the nails and the torn edges of the shingle with roofing cement. -
Step 2
If a shingle is badly damaged and needs to be replaced, you will first need to remove the nails holding it in place.
To remove the nails along the top surface, you will have to gently bend up the overlapping shingles then use a flat bar to pry the nails loose. Work slowly so you do not damage the adjoining shingles.
After all the nails have been removed, you will be able to pull out the damaged shingle. -
Step 3
To replace the removed shingle, slip it in place and align the bottom edge with the other shingles in the row.
Drive new nails into the spots where you pried out the others. Drive in the top row of nails first. Next drive in the nails that are under the coverage.
You can drive in the nails by using a flat bar without lifting the upper shingles.
Slip the flat bar under the overlapping shingle and over the nail head. Strike against the flat bar just below the edge of the shingle.
Place a dab of cement over the old nail heads and several under the edge of the new shingle and any of the edges that were lifted.
