How to: Acrylic Bathtub Repair and Cleaning thumbnail
Some bathtub damage is too extensive for a repair kit.

Some minor damage, like scratches, on an acrylic tub surface are repairable. You can sand and buff an acrylic tub to reinstate its former luster. However, mild cracks and chips need more attention. Choose from a number of commercially available acrylic repair kits to fix damaged acrylic bathroom fixtures, including bathtubs. Although kits come with either tint or paint to match the color of the existing bathtub, it is unlikely the color will blend perfectly. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Clean around the damaged area. Use a small putty knife or razor blade to reduce the rough edges and scrape away loose paint and debris.

    • 2

Clean the damaged area thoroughly with a sponge dipped in mild soap and water. Rinse the area with clean water, then let the surface dry.

    • 3

Mix the acrylic repair product according to the manufacturer's directions. Include the correct tinting for your bathtub. If your kit uses paint, rather than a tinting product, you will apply it later.

    • 4

Fill the damaged area. Use a small putty knife to push the product into the chip or crack and feather the edges while you work to prevent forming a ridge around the damage. Follow the manufacturer's directions and allow the product to dry.

    • 5

Apply subsequent layers of product as needed. The patch needs to be level with the surface of the tub.

    • 6

Sand the patch. Use the grit recommended by the manufacturer and avoid sanding over the finish on the tub.

    • 7

Wipe the patch clean with a damp rag.

    • 8

Paint the patch according to the manufacturer's directions.

Tips & Warnings

  • Clean the tub regularly with mild soap or products recommended for use on acrylic surfaces.

  • Wear protective gear as recommended by the manufacturer of the repair kit.
