Throw aThanksgiving Potluck

When the guest list begins to grow, it is time to start sharing responsibility. A Thanksgiving potluck can bring unity to a group of friends/family while instilling pride in every individual. It also takes a huge load off the host/hostess. Thanksgiving is about being thankful for one another and there is no better way to show this by a Thanksgiving Potluck. Keep reading for some tips to create an organized and effective Potluck.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Organization
  • Communication with Guests
  • A giving spirit
  1. Step 1

DIVIDE RESPONSIBILITY!! The best part of a Thanksgiving Potluck is that the host does not have to take sole responsibility for the success of the party, it is a combined effort. Ask non-cooks to take responsibility for decor, candles and wine. Kids can plan a family activity focused on being Thankful or a Thanksgiving play. Send those who want something easy to do to the store for the shopping list. And accept help setting and cleaning up.

  2. Step 2

ASSIGN THE MENU!! One of the best parts of a potluck Thanksgiving is seeing where your guests really shine. More than one of them will have a Thanksgiving specialty to share. Be specific when signing guests up for dinner duty and make a list. Assign appetizers to guests who will be on time. For guests who work all day assign something which can be frozen over night. As host, you may be expected to provide the turkey, but if there is a talented chef on the guest list, you may want to consider opening up your kitchen for them.

  3. Step 3

PROVIDE THE EXTRAS!! Be prepared with extra utensils, serving dishes, chairs, etc. Find out how much refrigeration and table space you will need in advance, so renting can be done if needed. Urge guests to have their dishes as table ready as possible. Enjoy the combined effort of a family working together!

Tips & Warnings
  • Be creative in your assignments, but don't forget the favorite Thanksgiving staples.
  • Be sure to include at least vegetarian and low-fat dishes

on 11/7/2008 I don't think we could ever get away with doing a potluck at our family, but if I am ever hosting, I will keep it in mind.
