How to Remove a Motorcycle Transmission

A motorcycle transmission is similar to a car transmission. That's true in that it is a collection of different sized gears. The gears allow the bike to gain torque at low and high speeds. Removing the transmission allows you to inspect the gears. It lets you fix potential problems before they become larger ones. It also allows you to install a brand new transmission if necessary. Removing a motorcycle transmission can be done with basic tools in a matter of minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay down a tray next to your bike. You can store all the hardware you remove from the transmission in the tray. It is important to keep all of it together since it is easily lost.

    • 2

Locate the transmission on your motorcycle. It is next to the gear shift lever at the bottom of the motorcycle frame. It is usually housed in a circular, metal case that would be behind the driver's ankle when assuming the riding position.

    • 3

Remove the bolts that secure this metal plate to the bike. Remove the plate. Place it in the tray with the hardware. Inspect the transmission. You will see a collection of gears and cogs.

    • 4

Grasp the transmission with a pair of pliers. Make sure the bike is in neutral, then pull and slide out the transmission.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never attempt to do this right after a ride. Always make sure the motorcycle has been resting for several hours.
