Pet Sitter Training

Many people are launching their own pet sitting businesses. This is a great career for someone who truly loves pets and is looking to move into self employment. There are many pet sitter training programs available, but it's difficult to decide which opportunities are best. Learn where to go, how much it will cost and the advantages of formal pet sitting training.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit the National Association for Professional Petsitters (NAPP) website. This is the most widely accepted accreditation program. You can purchase a membership for $160, which provides you with extensive online resources for your business.

    • 2

Purchase a home study course. The NAPP offers a home study course that will give you all the tools necessary to start a pet sitting business, including specifics on training. The cost for the program is $240 and the fee qualifies you to take the accreditation test.

    • 3

Study for the NAPP certification test. Once you complete the home study course, you qualify to take the NAPP certification test. Spend some time studying for the test to ensure passing the first time.

    • 4

Take the accreditation test for professional pet sitting. The cost for taking the test is $125. You can complete the test online which makes the process much easier.

    • 5

Keep up with continuing education. To keep current in your business, check the NAPP website for continuing education opportunities and credit. This will assist in generating additional business.

Tips & Warnings

  • Maximize word of mouth. Marketing experts agree that word of mouth can be one of the most powerful marketing tools for building a business. When you have happy customers after a pet sitting appointment, ask for referrals. This will assist in growing your pet sitting business.

  • Don't get discouraged. Getting trained as a pet sitter is hard work but worth it when you reach your goal.
