How to Use Ortho Evra

Ortho Evra is a birth-control patch that is used once a week to provide protection against pregnancy. Many women prefer using this method of protection because it's easier than taking a daily pill. But like other birth-control methods, Ortho Evra is only effective when used correctly.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply the patch at the right time in your menstrual cycle. You must apply the patch within 24 hours of your period. If you miss this window of opportunity, another method of protection will be needed to prevent pregnancy.

    • 2

Decide where the patch will be worn. You can wear the Ortho Evra patch on your upper torso, stomach, backside or upper arm. Decide which area will be most convenient for you. It helps if the area isn't often exposed, to avoid damaging the patch.

    • 3

Remove the patch from the wrapper and peel back the liner. Apply the patch to your skin, pressing firmly for 10 seconds.

    • 4

Check the sides of the patch. Press your fingers around the outside of the patch to make sure it's properly applied.

    • 5

Examine your patch daily. It's important that your Ortho Evra patch remain in proper position. Check the patch every day to ensure it's placed correctly.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure your patch isn't damaged. Don't expose it to situations that could cut or damage it. This can interfere with the effectiveness of the patch.

  • Don't smoke while using the patch. Smoking while using Ortho Evra can increase the chances of blood clots.
