The need for child daycare is higher than ever in today's society. If you love children and have the means to open a daycare, it may be a perfect career for you. A quality daycare business can help children feel comfortable while being away from their parents. Before you take steps to open a child daycare, it's important to establish your objectives for doing so. You can then ensure that you have a solid business plan in place.

Things You'll Need:

  • Adequate space Educational toys CPR certification Business license
  1. Step 1

Create a safe environment for children. You'll need a space that is big enough for the children to play, and you need one that is free of hazards. The space should be free of loose wires, sharp edges and heavy objects which could topple over onto little ones.

  2. Step 2

Make playtime educational. Since you'll need to invest in toys for your new daycare business, try to choose toys that are educational and fun. Toys that incorporate letters and numbers can help older toddlers as they learn to count and read. Talking toys can help babies and young toddlers form their language skills.

  3. Step 3

Ease kids' anxiety. Many children get anxious when they are separated from their parents. When you get a new child into your daycare, take time to get to know him. If you can establish a bond with him, he'll feel less stressed at being away from his family.

  4. Step 4

Set competitive prices. Financial objectives are a major part of any business, and daycare is no exception. You can charge parents by the hour or day, or on a weekly or monthly basis. To encourage repeat business, offer parents a special deal such as six months for the price of five. You may also wish to offer a discount on the second child if a family already has one of their kids in your daycare.

  5. Step 5

Manage expectations. Parents will be less likely to take advantage of your services if you establish clear boundaries and expectations. Set strict hours of business. Require that parents drop off and pick up their kids within those hours. If you run your daycare business out of your home, you may find parents try to push those time boundaries. Simply be firm and stick to your set schedule.

  6. Step 6

Follow the rules. Each state has different guidelines regarding childcare businesses so it's important to check with your state prior to opening your business. There may be requirements on the number of kids you can care for as well as specific medical training you must have. Get a current CPR certification if you don't have one already.

  7. Step 7

Get a business license. While it's not required in most states, it'll give you added protection. You also will not have to give out your individual social security number to parents that use work-sponsored daycare savings plans. Instead, you can merely give them your business license number.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can write off all business-related expenses so save your receipts.
  • Accidents happen. To protect yourself in case a child gets hurt on your property, purchase liability insurance.
