  1. Step 1

Must love art. Passion for creating artwork especially developing tattoos is important in making a tattoo business successful. Learn how to make tattoos by going to school. There are Institutes that specialize in showing how to create tattoos such as TBPI (Tattoo and Body Piercing Insitute) in California.

  2. Step 2

Become certified. You must be educated in how to develop tattoos and take care of them in order to prevent infections. Earn a certification and learn how to sterilize equipment. Sterilization and cleanliness processes are set forth by the health department. Upon finishing your education which can take up to two years, go to the city hall in your town and apply for a state license. Your application may take several weeks to process.

  3. Step 3

Find a location. Deciding on where to open a tattoo business is important since you will want it on a main street or area that is easy to find. Typically tattoo parlors are near restaurants, clubs, and bars.

  4. Step 4

Advertise. Budget for advertising and start out with small ads and flyers before going big.

  5. Step 5

Buy equipment and set up a display of the designs you will offer. Once you determine the type of designs you will create for your clients then you will know what color ink you will need to purchase. There are various tattoo suppliers that you can order the equipment from including inks, machinery, first aid kits, needles and sterilizers. First aid kits are important in case of any accidental cuts.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sure to explain to the customers how to take care of the tattoo in order to avoid infection. Keeping it clean and covered for the first few days is important.
  • Develop an information sheet of instructions for the customer to sign. Retain a copy as proof for your records.
