The list of projects that one can do with metal is endless. Once you have a quality metal shop set up, either in a corner of the garage or in a shed out back, you'll be on your way to creating all types of objects made from metal. Tool boxes, metal vises, speaker stands, wine racks, folding shovels, pulley blocks, planters, hack saws, and folding cots are only but a few of the items on a metalworkers list. If you enjoy the heat and the sparks from welding, and you would like a few different metal work tips, read through the following steps to learn how it is done.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up your metal shop. Install a heavy duty metal workbench, a few cabinets, and shelves. Stock up on a few simple metal working tools. A few good ones to start are, a hammer, vise, tongs, pliers, a wrench, and a dremel.

    • 2

Install a welding machine if you will be welding metal items together. Metalworkers use welders to make shelves, racks, or other small tools.

    • 3

Hold all hot metal with pliers and tongs. Fullers are used to spread out hot metal so it can be hammered flat. If you are making holes in metal for jewelry, use a drift pin. This tool is also used for enlarging fastener holes.

    • 4

Before you drill a hole in your metal, use a punch to create a divet where the drill tip will sit. Punching a notch first makes drilling easier than trying to drill on a flat smooth surface.

    • 5

Drill through larger metal projects using a drill press. Shape metal prior to welding using a bench or pedestal grinder. A metal lathe is also used to form and shape metal.

Tips & Warnings

  • Because metal is so hard, heated metal is easier to work with, just be careful of hot metal.

  • Always wear gloves when working with sharp and hot metal. Always wear goggles when operating a power tool, especially when working with wood and metal. Flying sharp debris can damage the eyes.
