Prevent Seasickness on a Cruise

Going on a cruise can be exciting and you could have the experience of a lifetime but what happens when you get seasick? Feeling nauseous and sick due to motion sickness could ruin your trip. There are quite a few remedies you can use to ward off potential seasickness so that your cruise is pleasurable and full of good memories.

Instructions

    • 1

Use over-the-counter medications. There are several over-the-counter medications you can try such as Dramamine and Bonine. Each has mild side effects such as drowsiness when using Dramamine. These are best used before any nausea takes effect so use them to prevent the problem, not after you are feeling seasick.

    • 2

Get the patch. Your doctor can prescribe a patch to use for seasickness. This is worn directly under your ear and the most popular brands found are the Transderm and Scopolamine patches. Like the pills, the patch can have mild side effects such as drowsiness but you can apply it at least four hours before you board the ship so you will have time to take a nap and not have to worry about feeling sleepy later.

    • 3

Eat some ginger. Ginger has been proven to curb the feeling of nausea and vomiting. It comes in many different forms such as crackers, gum and even pills you can swallow. This is an excellent alternative for those who want a natural form of treatment.

    • 4

Be sure to eat something. Always eat a meal of non-acidic foods before sailing so that your stomach isn't empty. An empty stomach is a sure way of feeling seasickness while on board; especially if you're prone to motion sickness.

    • 5

Look toward the horizon. It's a known fact that looking toward the horizon can help when you are feeling motion sickness. Focus on a point in the distance. Since fresh air helps as well, try to go out on deck and focus your vision toward the horizon, keeping with the motion of the ship.

    • 6

Keep away from others who are ill. The easiest way to start feeling sick is to be around someone else who is vomiting. Try to stay away from someone who is already experiencing motion sickness so you don't have sympathetic sickness as well.
