Space heaters are convenient methods of warming a house on a cold winter day. They're especially convenient when moving from room to room, since they're portable. However, space heaters are a leading cause of fires, and if not used safely, can destroy a home in minutes.

1. Keep them in the right place. Always place your space heater on a level floor instead of on top of tables or furnishings. A space heater can tip over if not on a level surface, causing damage to the heater and risking fire and electric shock.

2. Purchase a heater with safety mechanisms. Most space heaters now have automatic cut-off mechanisms in case of a tip-over. These will shut the heater off and keep it from catching your flooring or carpet on fire. Always looks for safety guides and information before purchasing a space heater.

3. Use kerosene heaters properly. Never put any liquid such as gasoline into a kerosene heater. Do not deviate from the manufacturer's recommended usage.
