How to Brace a Gable Roof
When building any type of roof it is important to make sure it is as sturdy and secure as possible. Roofers use many techniques to construct quality roofs. Building a gable roof only requires a higher pitch to qualify. But because the pitch is higher, supports are more important. While attaching the rafters to the plate and ridge beam, sometimes the gable ends need bracing. These braces keep the roof intact until everything can be nailed together properly.

Things You'll Need
- Gable end rafters 16-penny nails Nail gun 1-by-6 brace studs Jack post Gable end studs 2-by-6 brace 1/2-inch structural-one plywood
-
-
1
Pull up a gable end rafter and nail it to the plate using two 16-penny nails on the front, and one on the back.
-
2
Nail the second gable end rafter to the ridge plate the same way. The two rafters will connect at the center constructing the pitch of the roof.
-
3
Brace the gable end with a temporary 1-by-6 stud nailed diagonally from the rafters to the roof joist, one on each side.
-
4
Install a jack post vertically that runs up from the joist and connects to the center of the gable end rafters where they meet at the ridge board.
-
5
Fill in the gable end with vertical gable studs, one on each side of the jack post. Then add two additional studs next to those. These studs add necessary support to the gable ends.
-
6
Insert a 2-by-6 brace that runs diagonally from the joist in front of the jack post up to the ridge board. Insert a brace stud on both ends of the building.
-
7
Shear the front of the gable ends with a 1/2-inch structural-one plywood. This is a bracing technique that adds lateral strength to the gable roof.

Tips & Warnings
Extra bracing studs that run from the rafters to the joist, or from the rafters to the rideg beam, are recommended, especially in high winds.
When doing any type of construction, especially on the top of the house, make sure someone is nearby just in case of a fall. Always wear face, eye and hand protection when working with power tools and wood.
