There's no need to fumble around with a map trying to decipher its legend and overlapping street names. Route planning software offers users an interactive experience. You can zoom in and out, view hybrid maps, check travel conditions and find the best routes.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

Find the most efficient route. It's the most obvious function of the software, but it's what all route planning programs do best. Programs factor in distance, speed limit, road type and traffic to help you reach your destination without needless delays.

  2. Step 2

Calculate the duration of your trip. Route planning software includes the distance and anticipated travel time. Programs account for current travel conditions to give you realistic estimates.

  3. Step 3

Get detailed, turn-by-turn directions. Many programs offer Global Positioning System (GPS) support that allows users to track their progress live, receive turn-by-turn prompts and get live traffic data. Users without GPS equipment still have access to detailed route descriptions and visual support. Users can get pictures from traffic cameras with graphics indicating where to turn.

  4. Step 4

Use routing software to enhance the drive. If you have extra time on your hands, try taking a scenic route, or if you want to save money, many programs offer users the option to avoid tolls.

  5. Step 5

Locate points of interest with your route planner. You can search for and receive the location of millions of valuable spots--gas stations, bookstores, auto shops, hotels--all plotted on an interactive map. See Resources below for links to route planning software.
