How to View RGB Colors on a Mac

Websites and computer displays use the RGB color model--which stands for Red, Green and Blue--to project different colors onto a screen. The systems combine certain levels of red, green and blue to create millions of colors in between. Through the Digital Color Meter utility, which comes installed on all new Mac computers, users can browse around their screen and have the system detect what RGB levels they are viewing. This article explains how to view RGB color levels on a Mac.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Mac running OS X 10.4 or later
  1. Step 1

    Open a new Finder window by clicking on the icon in the dock.

  2. Step 2

    Navigate to the "Applications" folder in the new Finder window, then open the "Utilities" folder.

  3. Step 3

    Double-click on the "Digital Color Meter" icon to open the utility program.

  4. Step 4

    Move your mouse pointer around the screen to see a zoomed-in display of the colors you are viewing.

  5. Step 5

    Select an RGB format from the drop-down menu in the Digital Color Meter window to view the RGB levels you are currently looking at.
