Traveling light and yet practically should be on every traveler's to-do list. Packing an airline carry-on should be simple, effective and easy. The following provides you with a list of guidelines for packing your carry-on as you prepare to travel to any location.

From Quick Guide: Vacation Preparation
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Purchase a lightweight carry-on that is easy to tote from place to place. Make sure it isn't too large, as you will need to fit it under the seat in front of you or in the overhead bin. Airlines publish their size and weight requirements, so look up this information in advance for all airlines you will be using during your trip.

  2. Step 2

Pack a lightweight change of clothes. Underwear should be the bare minimum you include. Also bring a sealable bag for dirty clothes in case you get stuck overnight somewhere or your luggage gets lost.

  3. Step 3

Take all medications with you in your carry-on, along with your passport and any important travel documents such as your trip's itinerary and baggage claim tickets.

  4. Step 4

Pack a paperback book or a small notepad and pen to occupy yourself during travel. You may also want to take an iPod with you to listen to music, along with your cell phone.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not pack heavy things in your carry-on, as it can make traveling a burden. Also leave room for items you may want to purchase during layovers.
  • Keep an eye on all luggage and carry-on items at airports.
