1
Call your doctor immediately if you believe you may have chronic bronchitis. Chronic bronchitis symptoms include shortness of breath, wheezing and coughing up mucus or phlegm. Fever, fatigue and chest pains may also occur. Mucus and phlegm will usually be green to yellowish green. Sometimes, the mucus and phlegm may take on a neon green or orange color. More serious symptoms include a fever over 102, coughing up blood or a chest cold that lasts over two weeks. If you experience any or all of these symptoms you should contact your doctor, as there are treatment options that only a doctor can give you.

Visit your doctor. He will be your main source of help while combating chronic bronchitis. Your doctor may give you antibiotics, bronchodilators or corticosteroids. No matter what your doctor decides to give you, make sure to follow his directions completely.

3
Stop smoking immediately, if you smoke. Smoking is the most common cause of chronic bronchitis. If you continue smoking, you will only continue irritating your lungs and prolong the disease. Any smoking habits must completely cease.

Make sure to consume a large amount of liquid each day. This means drinking fluids every one to two hours. If your doctor has restricted your liquid intake, then follow his instructions. Use of alcohol and coffee should cease, as they may cause a loss of fluid within your body.
-
5
Get lots of rest. Your body will need as much energy as possible to fight chronic bronchitis. Take as many days off of work or school as your doctor suggests and use these days to get as much rest as possible.
-
6
Take aspirin or acetaminophen to relieve any body aches. If you are taking any other medications, check with your doctor before taking either of these medicines. Children should not be given aspirin due to its strength.
-
7
Pay attention to any mucus you cough up. You should take note of its color and how often you are coughing. This information should be reported to your doctor.
