The Sun, illuminating all in its path, is the source of life--and in astrology, of individual identity. The Sun in an astrological chart is the primary indicator of a person's ego: what the world witnesses and who the individual sees in the mirror. When considering a horoscope, look to the Sun and ask questions about its role in the chart and in the person's life. Depending on other astrological issues, such as houses and aspects, you can determine much about the chart holder's identity. Ask central questions about the person's identity--information that goes a long way to assessing his karmic journey.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

Clarify the role of the Sun in a person's horoscope. The Sun sign will indicate how the person will establish a sense of self and her ability to take positive action in her life. For example, a Cancer Sun sign will be an emotional creature, who comes at life somewhat sideways. She will be challenged to trust and to love--to take a chance on her heart getting broken.

  2. Step 2

Inquire into other astrological influences, such as aspects and houses. If challenges are present, the person is called upon to examine any tendencies toward selfishness and insensitivity. These qualities are not destiny. They represent the person's opportunity to establish a healthy identity, absent dysfunction. Have no worries, though: Everyone has dysfunction to overcome.

  3. Step 3

Ask identity questions. Who is the person? What types of life experiences shine light on and empower his sense of self? In what areas can the chart holder gain personal power? What assumptions need to be examined?

  4. Step 4

Determine how the Sun sign can aid the person in developing her ego, so she can take action in the world. These are the Sun's central areas of influence. A Leo Sun sign will be drawn toward self-expression in the world, and how to balance that bright activity in ways that are not self-centered. There are no dark caverns of the mind here. Put it out there and bring in the radiant light of the Sun.
