Step 1
Learn all about vintage gas tanks, you'll find webites that offer photos and interesting background information (see Resources). Another great way is to find an antique motorcycle group in your area. Members are more than happy to exchange ideas and share what they know. Look for a club online, or ask at a nearby motorcycle dealer.
-
Step 2
Find out what's for sale locally (again, club members and retailers are good sources) once you're familiar with the field. You also can shop for vintage tanks on Web sites or place your bid in an online auction.
-
Step 3
Be aware that when you find a gas tank chances are it will need some work. Try to find a local restoration and cleaning service or use an online one (see Resources). Reputable companies will sandblast the tank inside and out, repair any damage and coat the tank to prevent rust.
-
Step 4
Learn how to work on your old gas tank yourself. Pick up tips from motorcycle veterans in your area, or visit helpful Web sites (see Resources). They'll take you through the steps for various projects, such as getting rid of rust.
