Building a Sewing Machine Cabinet
A good sewing machine cabinet is the centerpiece of a functional work space. This is equally true whether you have a dedicated sewing room or a corner of a bedroom or living room. For many sewers, the right sewing table is one made to unique specifications. Consider the features you want when planning a sewing machine cabinet and be sure you have the tools and skills you need.

Figure out specific needs for the sewing enthusiast. If you sew and are building your own sewing table or sewing armoire, you probably already know what you want. If you are building a sewing cabinet for someone else or have been hired to build one, find out what he will store and how he will use the surfaces and storage. Many sewing cabinets when closed and not in use look like a small closed cabinet; however, a machine riser or hinges allow a machine to come up from below and additional hinged work surfaces can be opened to allow for additional space. Some newer sewing work spaces use armoire style cabinets.

Look at plans you find online or elsewhere. See if there is a design that works, and assess the required materials. If you purchase sewing machine cabinet plans or are drafting your own plans, review them carefully, double checking measurements and features.

Make all needed lumber cuts and label each piece to allow for organized construction of your sewing cabinet. If you are not using a purchased machine riser mechanism, you should be able to buy all needed supplies at your local lumber yard, building center or home improvement store. Older machines can often be mounted with simple hinges for an old-fashioned sewing cabinet, but this is not appropriate for computerized machines.

Build your sewing machine cabinet per your plans. If you are using a machine riser, you may wish to consult the manufacturer for additional installation instructions. Consider adding small bins to hold notions and small items on the inside of any doors. Thoroughly oil all hinges and drawer mechanisms for smooth function. Make sure all wood joins are smooth and there is no risk of snagging delicate fabric or thread.

Sand and finish your sewing machine cabinet to match the space. Move it in and install the sewing machine. Remember to periodically maintain the hinges and machine riser mechanism as needed to make sure you can enjoy your sewing machine cabinet for years to come.

Tips & Warnings
You may wish to allow workspace for a surger, cover stitcher, or embroidery machine. If you expect to upgrade machines in a few years, choose a versatile design. Allow for workspace, whether on the top of the sewing machine cabinet or with hinged work surface panels.
