How to Keep Cats From Biting

A cat biting is a natural behavior when they are kittens. They are teething just as babies do so they have a natural tendency to bite. But if this is a behavior that continues when the cat reaches an adult age, this is a problem. Sometimes cats will bite when you are petting them as a sign that they don't want you to touch them anymore. But nonetheless, cat biting is a behavior that should not be tolerated.

  1. Step 1

    When your cat tries to bite, try giving him a cat toy to get his attention away from you and distract him into doing something else.

  2. Step 2

    If your cat does bite you, do not just jerk your hand away. He will think you want to play. Slowly pull your hand away and distract him. If he continues, gently blow in his face and that should get him away from you for a bit.

  3. Step 3

    If your cat insists on biting all the time, maybe you should try not to play with him with your hands for a while. There are so many cat toys on the market that you can keep him entertained that way.

  4. Step 4

    Another great tip is when you cat bites you, gently push down on her tongue. After a few times, your cat will get the message.

  5. Step 5

    When you cat bites you, look her in the eyes and sternly say "no." Some cats get the message using this method.

  6. Step 6

    Use a spray bottle with water and gently spray your cat. Don't spray too hard though.

  7. Step 7

    Get another kitten as a playmate for your current cat.

  • You want to watch out for signals that your cat is about to bite. If your cat's tail starts twitching and his body starts to tense up, these are signs that your cat doesn't want to be stroked anymore. Also if the ears turn and flicker or the cat's head turns and starts towards your hand, this is a sign to back off.
  • Cat bites can be harmful because a cat's mouth harbors bacteria which can cause serious infection. Cats have extremely sharp teeth and can penetrate your skin. This can cause tissue damage. If your cat does puncture your skin, it is important to seek medical attention right away. Even if you don't think it is a bad puncture, it is better to be safe than sorry.
