How to Make an Origami Flip Knife

Origami is a great craft for kids. Though it requires some precision, it allows children to get creative with just a few supplies. This flip knife is a good project for a child experienced in origami. Though it requires concentration to get the knife just right, this project may be particularly enthralling for older kids who don't want to make the usual animals and flowers

Instructions

    • 1

Lay a square of origami paper, colored side up, on a flat surface. Make sure the surface is clean and dry.

    • 2

Fold the upper right corner to the lower left corner, creating a crease. Unfold. Then do the same with the upper left and lower right corners. These creases will act as guides for the rest of the folds.

    • 3

Turn the paper so that it looks like a diamond rather than a square. Fold the lower left and lower right corners to the center of the paper, creating a kite shape.

    • 4

Fold the corners down to meet the edge. They will create triangles, with the tips touching the edge of the kite.

    • 5

Fold the kite's points in to line up with the edge of the triangle. Unfold, flip the paper over and refold those points over the white side of the paper.

    • 6

Fold the far edge of the paper in to meet the center line. Fold the right edge of the paper over so that the point meets the center. Fold the bottom edge of the paper in to meet the center line.

    • 7

Fold the tip of the knife down just a little, then fold the paper on either side of the tip to meet in the middle.

    • 8

      Fold the paper in half.

    • 9

Unfold, and fold the top portion of the paper diagonally each way, lining it up with the top of the colored portion. Unfold after each diagonal fold.

    • 10

Pinch the paper at the base of the two folds to make the long, pointed end stand up.

    • 11

Fold the pointed end straight down, so that the tip meets the opposite edge of the paper. Fold the knife in half.

    • 12

To open the knife, the user should grip the handle and use his thumb to flip out the blade.
