When the time comes for you to enter your child in preschool, you are faced with the decision of whether you want to attempt it yourself. Keeping your preschooler at home is a welcome idea. Teaching him yourself is not as difficult as you might think. It is more rewarding than you can imagine. You have been his teacher up to this point. He has already learned so much. In case you might be worried about your abilities, though, here are some ways to get started.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Pick a theme for your lessons. Choose something fun to learn about like penguins or butterflies. You can even choose a specific season. Choose books on these themes. Go with one theme a week. Read a new book about it each day. When you're done reading, have arts and crafts time. This activity serves as wonderful science lesson for your child.

  2. Step 2

Choose a rhyme. Pick a new rhyme to teach your child each week. Children love to rhyme, and it is a fun way for them to learn numbers, the alphabet and the seasons. The possibilities are endless when you are teaching through rhyme.

  3. Step 3

Use the imagination of your child in your lessons. Sit with your child and begin to tell a story. Then tell him it is his turn. Let him continue the story. Young children have an unbelievable imagination. Letting him be the author will allow his creativity to shine through.

  4. Step 4

Count jellybeans. Grab a bag of jellybeans and count out ten to start. This will help him learn to count while making it fun. He will absolutely love counting the colored candies. If he loves doing it, he will want to do it. Once he has mastered counting to ten, you can show him how to place the jellybeans into groups of five. This aids in identifying what groups of objects look like. It helps him recognize that two sets of numbers equal one number.

  5. Step 5

Use flashcards. Using flashcards to help him identify letters of the alphabet is smart. It is a fun way for him to learn without becoming bored. The flashcards made for toddlers usually have a picture corresponding with the letter. Because of this, you can make this into a game for him as well. Flip the cards over and play your own version of Memory. See how many letters he can correctly match. Teaching a preschooler is all about having fun. The more play that is involved, the more success you will have.
