How to Become a Real Estate Agent in Washington
Applying for a real estate license in Washington state requires a fair amount of coursework to be completed. This is not just to study for the real estate examination itself. A licensed real estate agent must complete additional courses after he receives his real estate license in the state of Washington, and while he is practicing in the real estate industry.

Research the background requirements for a real estate license in Washington. These include passing a background check with close consideration of ethics, and being at least 18 years old.

Complete required coursework before taking the real estate examination for the state of Washington. The required coursework includes taking 60 or more hours of classes on the basics of real estate. (See Resources for a list of schools offering classes.)

Complete the state of Washington's real estate examination within 5 years of completing your real estate education coursework (see Resources). You must pay a fee to take the exam.

Pay the licensing fee to the state of Washington after passing the required examination. The license is good for 2 years license, after which time it must be renewed, requiring another fee.

Continue your education after receiving your real estate license. The state of Washington requires that individuals practicing real estate take a 30-hour course on real estate practices after receiving their licenses.

Complete additional educational courses in addition to the courses in Step 5 while working in the real estate industry. A real estate professional must continue her real estate education while working in the field. This includes a total of 30 hours. Most of these courses are elective, but there is a 3-hour required course that all professionals with a real estate license must complete.

If you fail to take and pass the real estate examination in Washington state within 5 years of completing your classes, you must take the classes again. The cost to take the real estate examination was approximately $138 in 2008. The licensing fee was approximately $146 in 2008; the renewal fee was the same.
When applying for a real estate license in Washington state, there is a background check. Real estate professionals are held to a high level of ethics.
