Dance a Cross Body Lead in Cha Cha

The cross body lead in Cha Cha is a fantastic step to add to your repertoire early on. It will be an "evergreen" pattern that you can utilize for the rest of your dancing career, regardless of how many more patterns you learn. A classic move, it is seen in many dance styles, such as the Salsa, Rumba, Hustle and Bolero. It retains its popularity due to its change of direction and relative ease of accomplishing the footwork.

Things You'll Need:

  • Dance shoes Cha Cha music Partner

    Man's Part

  1. Step 1

Begin in closed dance position with a basic step starting with your left foot on beat "1". After a measure of music, your break forward on beat "2" will allow you to begin the cross body lead.

  2. Step 2

As you recover from beat "2" onto beat "3," rotate your body counter clockwise and pass your left foot under your body so that it can be placed behind you (6 o'clock from forward). This allows you to open up that left side and lead the lady across.

  3. Step 3

Chasse with the lady on beats "4 and 1." She will be doing a chasse forward while you do a chasse to the side in this section.

  4. Step 4

Change weight twice on beats "2" and "3," once to your right foot on beat "2" and once to your left foot again on beat "3." This should be accompanied by a rotation of your body counter clockwise so that you are always relating your upper body to your partner. You should finish facing each other after these weight changes, and your right foot should be free to proceed into a chasse to your right so that you can do another basic.

  5. Lady's Part

  6. Step 1

Begin in closed position with your right foot on beat "1." Perform one basic step.

  7. Step 2

When the man breaks forward on beat "2" a measure later, he will open the left side of his body so that you can pass. You must do a forward chasse here on beats "4 and 1" (or lock step) so that you can accomplish the traveling needed.

  8. Step 3

Step across with your right foot on beat "2." This will set you up to turn counterclockwise. Perform the turn so that you face your partner. You should now be with your weight full on your right foot after you have turned, and your left foot should be free to do a chasse to your left and repeat another basic step.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can loop a basic and cross body lead on both sides (i.e. twice) for extra practice.
  • Always practice slowly before attempting a full speed step.
