Things You'll Need:
- Diploma or certificate from an accredited PTA program Government-issued identification card

Step 1
Get approval from the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) or the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS) to take the exam (see Resources below). You will not be allowed to make an appointment to take your exam unless approval has been given.

Receive scheduling permit from APTA or ABPTS. If you have been approved to take your PTA exam, you will receive a scheduling permit along with a letter informing you of all relevant information you need to make an appointment to take your PTA exam.

Find a Prometric testing center that offers the Physical Therapist Assistant exam (see Resources below).

Click "Schedule an Exam" and provide the required information to schedule your PTA exam. You will be asked to sign a privacy statement and provide information on eligibility. Most of the eligibility information you will need is in your scheduling letter, so make sure you have it before scheduling the PTA exam.

Arrive at testing center at least 30 minutes before your scheduled test time. You must have a government-issued photo identification that includes your signature to take the exam. You will not be permitted to take the PTA exam without your identification and scheduling permit.
