How to Enjoy Willow River State Park

Willow River State Park is located in the western part of Wisconsin. It is home to over 2,800 acres of prairie, lush forest and white water. With more than 300,000 visitors each year, this park also provides naturalist programs on everything from water quality to turtles. These programs abide by the Wisconsin Model Academic Standards for students K1 through Grade 5. The programs make it an ideal spot for local school field trips.

  1. Step 1

    Reserve a campsite. Whether you tent camp or have an RV, Willow River's campsites are the some of the most popular in the state. With flush toilets, showers and hiking trails nearby, this is a great spot to have as your meet-up point for a long weekend with the family. Only 72 sites are available. Reservations are recommended.   2. Step 2

    Drive to Willow River. Head northeast of Hudson on County Road A. Find the park at 1034 County Highway A. If you are coming off of I -94, take exit 5. Go north on Highway 12 for 1. 6 miles. County Highway U will take you right to County Highway A. You'll see the park entrance on the left.

  3. Step 3

    Hike the trails. There are 13 miles of hiking trails within the park that have been planned. You will receive the full effect of the wonderful scenery available. The trail to Willow Falls is extremely popular and provides 4 overlooks into the river's gorge. Willow Falls itself is contained within the 200 foot deep river gorge. This provides the visitor with a powerful look at what water can do.

  4. Step 4

    Pack your snowshoes. Willow River is breathtaking in the winter. The park has maintained trails for snowshoes, dog sledding and hiking. Don't let the cold weather keep you inside. This is the time of year you can see the bald eagles in the clear sky.

Tips & Warnings
  • Visit the nature center in the park to get familiar with the local flora and fauna to make the most of your trip.
  • Firewood should be purchased from the park store or in the local area to prevent the spread of the "ash borer."
