For computer owners who are unable to access the Internet using a phone line, DSL or cable connection, a satellite connection may be necessary. Due to geographical location, it is not always possible to receive high-speed internet access through a provider; such is the case in rural areas. Satellite technology offers a solution to this problem by providing the computer user with high speed internet access, via a satellite mini dish receiver that is installed at the user's home or office.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Contact a satellite provider that services your area. To do this, check your local yellow pages or speak with others in your area to see what companies they are using to receive Internet access.

  2. Step 2

Ask questions and make sure that your computer meets the specifications required by the satellite internet provider. Most providers require a minimum of 100 megabytes of free hard disc space, along with an Ethernet NIC card. It is important to familiarize yourself with your computer's hardware before placing the order to receive satellite Internet access.

  3. Step 3

Set up an appointment for installation of service. Once you have narrowed down your search and decided on a company to provide you with satellite service in your area, make an appointment. Set the appointment around a period of time that you will be physically available. Most installation requires that the owner of the business or residence be available to allow the installer access to the premises, inside and out.

  4. Step 4

Have your computer ready and available for access during the time of installation. The satellite internet technician will often times request access to your computer to setup the necessary software and hardware required for satellite access. This usually involves setting up an external modem to your computer with wiring that connects to the mini dish outside your home or office.

  5. Step 5

Test the satellite connection, ask the technician questions, and familiarize yourself with the components before the technician leaves your home of office. Hands-on demonstrating of how the equipment works, by the technician, will make it easier to access the internet. Otherwise the possibility exists that after the technician leaves, you may realize that you have no idea of how to use the equipment or service.

Tips & Warnings
  • If at any time you are experiencing slow, intermittent or no service at all, it is best to contact your satellite internet provider as soon as possible. There may be minor adjustments to the mini dish that are necessary to receive a proper satellite signal.
  • It is a good idea to request a maintenance agreement from your satellite provider. Otherwise, you may find yourself with a hefty bill in cases of loss of service that may be caused by damage to any of the satellite hardware.
