How to Install Brick Veneer

Brick veneer can spice up any inside or outside wall. Brick veneer is used to reface fireplaces, and can be laid on a backyard concrete slab to give the illusion of a full brick patio. Installing brick veneer is quick and easy. Once you have the proper materials and you've purchased a good quality brick veneer, read through the following steps to learn how to properly apply it. Nothing beats do-it-yourself handiwork to experience the thrill of a job well done.

• Brick veneer Construction adhesive Tile cutter Mason's mortar mix Bucket Electric mixer Brick trowel Pointed trowel Large sponge

Instructions

1. Begin installing your brick veneer at the corners and edges of your wall. Lay a full brick on the top corner edge, and then a half brick underneath. Follow this pattern from the ceiling to the floor.

2. Put a bead of construction adhesive on the back of a brick 1/4 inch from the edges. Place it on the wall applying firm pressure for about five seconds.

3. Continue placing the brick veneer until the entire area is covered. Leave a 1/2 inch gap between bricks on all four sides.

4. Pour a bag of mason's mortar mix into a bucket. Add water and stir.

5. Scoop up mortar mix with a brick trowel. Press the mortar into the joints between the brick veneer using a pointed trowel. Fill all the gaps between bricks with mortar.

6. Take a very large mason's sponge soaked in water and completely wash the bricks until all the excess mortar is off and the grout area is level and smooth. Dip your sponge in water as often as needed.

Tips & Warnings

• Use a tile cutter to cut the brick veneers in half. Stir the mortar using an electric rotary mixer. You can readjust a brick for about fifteen minutes before the adhesive dries.

• Protect the floor from falling grout by using a grout bag or a caulking tube. Use ear protection when using a tile cutter or any other electric tool.
