How to Fold the Maryland State Flag

The official flag of the State of Maryland is one of the most visually appealing and unique of all the United States state flags. Utilizing the family crests of George Calvert, First Baron of Baltimore, and the Crossland family, Calvert's mother's family, this quartered flag has a truly unusual design. Care, storage and folding guidelines for this flag are similar to those of the United States flag and the flags of other states.

Instructions

    • 1

Stand facing the other person. Each person should take one of the top corners and one of the bottom corners of the flag in each hand. Pull the flag taut and hold it at waist level.

    • 2

Tilt the flag sideways and right side up, as if it were flying. Bring the bottom two corners up to meet the top two corners. Grab the loose corners with one hand, and hold the corner formed by the folded midsection in the other.

    • 3

Keep the flag tilted sideways as in step two. Make another lengthwise fold just as you did in step two; you should now have four layers of the flag in each hand.

    • 4

Make a triangular fold starting on the red and white end of the flag. Make this fold by folding the corner of the closed end of the flag over the top of the flag. The corner should ultimately rest along the open end of the flag.

    • 5

Fold the triangle portion forward, directly toward the person holding the flag opposite you. This will create a new flat edge on the red and white end.

    • 6

Repeat and alternate the previous two steps, inching your way towards the other person by folding one triangle after another, until you eventually have a neatly folded triangle with a little tab on one side.

    • 7

Tuck the tab into the folds of the flag to secure it in place and keep the flag from unraveling.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you must fold the Maryland state flag as part of an official ceremony and have never done it before, be sure to practice first, ideally with the same person that will be folding it with you at the ceremony.

  • You should never allow the flag to touch the ground.
