Make Granola

Granola is a healthy and tasty treat. It can be expensive to buy but you can make it at home for much less. Make your own granola at home with this recipe.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 3 Cups Rolled Oats (not instant)
  • 1/4 Cup Sunflower Seeds
  • 1 Cup Sliced Almonds
  • 1 Cup Sweetened Coconut
  • 1/4 Cup Maple Syrup
  • 1/4 Cup Brown Sugar
  • 1/4 Cup Vegetable Oil
  • 1 Tsp Salt
  • 1 Tbsp Cinnamon
  • 1/2 Cup Raisins
  1. Step 1

In a large bowl, stir together the oats, seeds, almonds, and coconut.

In another bowl, thoroughly mix the maple syrup, brown sugar, salt, cinnamon and vegetable oil.

  2. Step 2

Pour the wet mixture into the dry mixture and toss together until evenly coated.

  3. Step 3

Pour onto a large baking sheet and bake at 300 degrees until golden brown. Stir and turn every 10-15 minutes to keep everything from clumping too much and to achieve an even color.

  4. Step 4

Once it has cooled, mix in the raisins or other fruit. Granola can be stored in an air tight container in the fridge or at room temperature.

  5. Step 5

Granola can be eaten by itself, with milk or with fresh fruit. Granola can also be sprinkled on top of smoothies, salads, yogurt or pudding.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a baking sheet with a rim to make stirring easier.
  • Add different kinds of dried fruit, nuts and seeds to vary the flavor.
  • Measure the oil first. Then, measure the maple syrup in the same cup, without rinsing it out first. The leftover oil makes removing the syrup from the cup easier.
  • Watch the granola closely to make sure that it doesn't burn.

on 3/3/2009 Should the coconut be fresh, since you're baking it, or should it be dried? Thanks!
