How to Make Yogurt Without a Yogurt Maker

To reduce all the additives and preservatives that are in most of our store bought yogurts, you can make your own homemade yogurt at home. Homemade yogurt has a milder flavor. It tastes great plain, with fresh or dried fruit, or even served with a little honey.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 quart whole or 2% milk
  • 1 - 2 T plain yogurt as a starter or 1 - 2 T commercial starter
  • Thermometer
  1. Step 1

    Warm milk in a the saucepan over medium-low heat until bubbles appear around the edge and steam rises from the milk.

  2. Step 2

    Pour the milk into a mixing bowl and slowly cool to 110 to 115 degrees, at room temperature.

  3. Step 3

    Put the starter is a small mixing bowl and add some of the warm milk to it. Mix until well combined, then pour into the larger bowl. Stir complete mixture to make sure all combined well.

  4. Step 4

    Cover the bowl with a heavy bath towel and keep warm for 6 to 8 hours (or overnight).

  5. Step 5

    When the yogurt has set, cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 8 hours before serving.
