Step 1
Think about the logistics of moving back home with your parents before anything. How much stuff do you have? Where will it all go? How about your car or pets? Try to find an answer to all of the questions your parents may ask you so they know you've put a lot of thought into this decision and are willing to put in the effort to make it work for the both of you.
-
Step 2
If possible, meet face to face with your parents when you bring up the idea. Your request will be more convincing if you ask in person.
-
Step 3
Tell your parents about the situation that you are currently in. Without talking about moving home yet, mention the things you need in order to get your situation under control, and how each of those things would help. For example: "If I could find a place to stay for 3 months rent-free (the need), I could easily find a new job without worrying about money issues." (The how it will help.)
-
Step 4
Finally, ask your parents nicely if you can move back in with them. Before they answer, mention everything you know about the logistics (step 1) of the move and how long you would stay. Also include that you've put a lot of thought into this decision, and that it would be really helpful for you during your particular situation.
-
Step 5
If they are hesitant at first, add "conditions" that you will abide by in order to show them you aren't just slacking off. For example: "I promise to spend at least 20 hours each week actively searching for a new job."
-
Step 6
If they accept, don't be shy and give them a huge hug. They have just helped you out big time. Always remember how they've helped you out, so in the future when they need help - you won't even think twice.
