Simple decorations will save you money compared to heavy ornamentation.

Cake has held an important role in weddings throughout much of history. Marriages in ancient Rome culminated with the groom breaking a cake of barley atop his new wife's head. A custom held in medieval England dictated that new couples exchange a kiss over a tower of sweet buns (see Reference 4). Today's wedding cakes may not be served hand-in-hand with such unusual traditions, but they're decidedly unique in their degrees of personality. From conventional tiered creations matching the bride's dress or the colors of a wedding to cakes shaped like favorite cartoon characters or animals, there is little limitation to the possibilities that exist when planning your own wedding cake. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a style for your cake.

Gather inspiration from photos found in wedding magazines or online. Take into account the theme of your wedding or style of your décor, as the colors and style of cake decorations should match.

Count the number of guests attending which will largely determine the size of the cake needed (see References 1, 2 and 3).

    • 2

      Determine your budget.

Establish which factors, if any, must be adjusted to keep your dream cake a financial possibility. Opt for fresh fruits or flowers instead of expensive handmade decorations. Order a smaller version of the cake to cut in front of guests; keep plain sheet cakes in the kitchen to serve to guests (see Reference 3).

    • 3

Select your baker by performing a search online, looking in your phone book or asking friends for recommendations.

Schedule consultations with prospective bakers and discuss your vision and budget. Bring photos to reference if desired. Look at portfolios of past work, taste samples and select a flavor for your wedding cake. Decide on a timeline for your final product (see References 1, 2 and 3).

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider the setting of your wedding before ordering a cake. Certain icing options, such as buttercream, don't hold up well in the hot and humid conditions of some outdoor receptions. Opt for a fondant coating instead (see Reference 3).
