How to Not Spend Too Much Money on Your Wardrobe

Do you love to shop but end up with a closet full of clothes you never wear? I know, I used to be like that too.

I've learned to streamline my shopping but still look cute.

A lot of it is to avoid impulse shopping and to take stock of what you need so when you do shop, you get the necessities.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • a bit of self control
  • an idea of your image
  • honesty
  1. Step 1

First of all, purge your closet. Get rid of anything that doesn't fit (okay, you can keep one pair of skinny pants), is irreparable or is way out of style. Anything you haven't worn in two seasons (like summer '07 and summer '08) should go. You'll never wear it.

  2. Step 2

Take a look at what you have left and mentally commit to mind what you actually wear all the time and why you like it.

  3. Step 3

The best way to maximize your wardrobe is to make sure you've got a few key basics in the best possible cut and fabric as possible. Most women wear the same ten things over and over again. Make those ten things the best you can afford because the fabric will hold up to frequent washing and the fit will be better.

  4. Step 4

Make a shopping/wish list of the basics you need. For example, my staples tend to be a pair or two of jeans in the season's wash and cut, one pair of new boots or sandals, one pair of multipurpose black heels, one pair well-cut trouser leg black pants, a fairly plain little black dress that fits me fabulously, one beautiful bra and a classic designer purse each in black and brown.

Make sure this list is the bare essentials.

  5. Step 5

Next, list 5-10 trendy or fun items you want for the season. For me this tends to be tops, earrings, clutches and shoes. These items, you'll buy at lower end stores because you'll only wear them for one season.

  6. Step 6

Have a good idea of how much you are planning to spend each time you go shop. Take that much plus enough for parking fees and dining (if applicable). Bring it in cash and take all your ATM and credit cards out of your wallet. Leave them at home.

  7. Step 7

If you don't love it, don't buy it. Because if you don't love it in the store, you won't wear it. If you find that you're undecided, leave it there (put it on hold) as you shop. If you find yourself obsessively thinking of it, later, go back to get it.

Tips & Warnings
  • Buy your staples during sales at high end stores for more mileage with your money.
  • Buy things in the color you loved, not the safe color. (You'd be surprised how much you'll wear it, especially if you aren't too matchy matchy.)
  • This advice can be applied to any style and at any age.
  • Ask yourself, "Do I love this?" If the answer isn't an immediate "Yes!" or you make excuses for why you should buy it, leave it. You can always buy it later if you realize it's a must-have.
  • Unless you are a socialite, you only need one cocktail dress. Find one absolutely fabulous dress. Accessories will make it different.
  • Don't buy things just because they are on sale. If you wouldn't consider buying it at full price, don't even bother.
  • Try not to buy clothes when shopping with friends. They can be detrimental to your wallet.
