Flower-punch greeting cards are simple and inexpensive to make.

Making your own flower-punch invitation cards for a wedding or a party is a way to send cards that look expensive but only cost pennies to create. Invitations with flower-punch embellishments take minutes to make and do not require many materials. Choose a simple design or one that is more elaborate. With just a few paper flowers and a handwritten message, create cards that no other bride will have to celebrate your own special occasion.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a piece of card stock into the size you require. Fold it in half if you are creating a blank invitation card, or leave as a flat square if it will be used for a traditional wedding invitation. Check that the card fits in the envelope you are using.

    • 2

Choose two contrasting colors of paper and cut them into small, manageable pieces for use with your flower punches. The size of paper depends on the size of flower punch you are using. Punch out two or more flower pieces for each flower you will put on the invitation. Use two pieces for a flat flower and more for a fuller one. The large base piece for each flower should be in one color and the smaller pieces should be in the second color.

    • 3

Place one small dot of glue onto the front of the card stock for each flower. Put each large punched flower onto a glue dot, with the glue in the middle of the flower. Press down gently and hold the flower in place for 10 seconds, until the paper has adhered to the glue.

    • 4

Put another dot of glue on the center of each flower. Press the smaller punched flowers onto the glue and hold it in place until both pieces are adhered. This creates a stacked-flower effect. If you want flat flowers, stop here. If you want a fuller look, add more small flower pieces, one on top of the other, until you have the effect you want.

    • 5

Use a paper-shaping tool to curl flower petals upward to create a three-dimensional look. If you prefer a flat design, leave the flowers as they are.

    • 6

Punch a hole in the center of each flower with a paper-piercing tool. Insert a brad into the hole, turn the card over and push the brad's prongs down, so they lay flat on the back of the card. Repeat with each flower. Cut a piece of colored paper to the same shape as your invitation, but make sure it is 1 inch smaller on each side. Glue the back of the paper and affix it to the back of the invitation, so it covers every brad. The back of the card should look as neat as the front.

    • 7

Draw stems and leaves around each paper flower with a colored pencil. You can use simple strokes or something more elaborate, depending on the style of card you want.

    • 8

Use a black-ink pen to add a message to the front if it is a flat wedding invitation, or inside for the folded versions.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a greeting-card template if you are making several invitations and want them all to be identical.
