Things You'll Need:
- Men's necktie
- Sturdy hair elastic (try goody's ouchless line)
- sewing machine or handsewn with needle and thread (color depending on your necktie)
- scissors
-
Step 1
solidneckties.comGather all of your materials together and first start with fitting the tie to your head. To do this fold the tie in half to make the two ends even lengths and then put around your head as you would a headband. Put your finger in place on where the tie ends meet. Mark this with a pencil or a pin.
-
Step 2
leethal.coloredlights.netA goody's elastic is about 2" long, so to fit comfortable move your marking about 1.5" up on each side of the tie. This is where you will attach the hair elastic. To do this, take one end of the tie and loop it through the hair elastic. Bring the hair elastic to the marking on that end and this is where you will sew the tie together tightly around the elastic. At this point you are only working on one side of the tie! What this means is pinch the one end of the tie around the elastic and sew, this lets the elastic slide around a bit and there will be a hanging "tail" from this tie end.
-
Step 3
craftstylish.comOnce step 2 is complete double check the measurement to make sure that when you do step 2 for the other tie end the headband will stretch slightly to fit comfortably without falling off. Then take the unattached tie end, pull through the other side of the elastic and pinch & sew the new side until you have the elastic joining the tie into a headband or "loop"
-
Step 4
flikr.comThere should now be two "tails", keep them for a true headband-tie appearance or cut them for a classic headband look. Another idea is to take the tails and wrap a bow around the elastic. There are many options with this project, the best part is the wide variety of men's ties out there, you can easily find a gorgeous vintage silk namebrand tie at goodwill and turn it into a beautiful headpiece. They also make for lovely gifts!
