It's important to mail a federal tax return on time and to the correct address. While many taxpayers have switched to online or electronic filing (e-filing), many still prefer the paper method. Either way, it's a good idea to know how to mail a federal tax return -- you never know when your computer is going to take the day off just when you need to file taxes.

Tax preparation
Prepare your tax return, either yourself or with the assistance of a qualified professional tax preparer/ accountant. Before you mail a federal tax return, it is important that your tax returns be complete, accurate and signed by the taxpayer(s).

Find the address of the specific IRS location which accepts tax returns for your area. Browse the IRS state-by-state listing to determine where to send yours (see link under Resources, below). It ma vary according to tax form used (1040, 1040-EZ, 1040-ES).

Mail taxes
Address a business size envelope to the IRS, using the specific address you located, or the address included in any tax booklets mailed to you. Use a first-class stamp, and put your return address in the upper left hand corner of the envelope.

Pay taxes
Write a check for the tax liability amount owed or the amount you are sending in with your federal tax return. Place the check and your completed tax return into the envelope and seal the flap.

Be sure to mail your tax return from an official USPS box or office.
Make sure your return is postmarked by the April deadline (or October for late filers with an extension).
Don't mail your tax return late, as you may be assessed a late fee or penalty.
