Shuffle Playing Cards like a Casino Dealer

After reading and applying the easy to follow steps one will be able to shuffle a regular 52 count card deck with professional casino dealer quality.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Deck of Playing Cards
  1. Step 1

The first step is labeled as washing the deck. Using both hands spread the playing cards face down on the surface of the shuffling area. While spreading and mixing the cards around use small circular hand motions to increase effectiveness. Attempt to disband any cards that are grouped together.

  2. Step 2

Bring the group of cards together with simultaneous inward sweeping hand motions. Once the playing cards form a small pile take a card off the top of the pile and use it as a shovel to pick up the entire pile. This is done by simply sliding the card between the shuffling surface and the pile of cards. When lifting the cards off of the surface be sure to keep the faces of the playing cards facing the dealer. This is important so that whoever else is playing the game cannot get an unfair advantage by seeing the faces of the cards.

  3. Step 3

Once the playing cards are secured in both hands loosen your grip on the cards and pat them on the table. The desired effect is that the cards will either be laying vertically or horizontally on the table in your hand. Either way they will have an entire flat edge on the shuffling surface. Now take a hand and push the cards that are standing straight up into the cards that are lying horizontally so that all of the cards are together as if you were packaging them in the box.

  4. Step 4

Lay the deck on the surface directly in front of you horizontally. As evenly as possible cut the deck so that there are two separate piles side by side. Rest the palms of your hands on the decks while placing each thumb under the near inside corner of each pile. (This is where the separate decks will initially be shuffled) Move your elbows towards your body and angle the decks so that your thumbs are touching. Keep steady downward pressure on the decks with your palms.

  5. Step 5

Lift up the corners of the playing cards simultaneously with your thumbs. Slightly pull the decks closer to each other and steadily slide your thumbs upward allowing the cards to separate and shuffle at the same time.

  6. Step 6

Remove your hands from the playing cards and reposition them with all four fingers on the backside of each deck and the thumb on the front side of the piles. Bring the decks together by forcing the backsides in. The two piles should now be completely touching with about half an inch of an overlap. At this time place the pinkie side of each palm on the table touching the far ends of the deck. Also lay your thumb and index finger on the top of the deck. Quickly push the cards together so that they are once again in form to be boxed away.

  7. Step 7

Repeat steps 4-6 two additional times.

  8. Step 8

Take your weak hand and grab the deck with the thumb on the front side of the deck and the four fingers on the backside. Lift the deck approximately 4 inches above the shuffling surface. Use the strong hand to grab between five and fifteen cards off of the top of the suspended deck and place them on the table. Continue to cut the suspended deck until all the cards are piled on top of each other.

  9. Step 9

Repeat steps 4-6 one more time.

  10. Step 10

Finally take approximately half of the top of the deck of cards and place them on the shuffling surface or cut card. Move the bottom half of playing cards back on top of the recently removed cards. This is the final cut of the deck and the process of shuffling the cards with professional dealer efficiency is complete.

Tips & Warnings
  • Shuffling this way on a hard surface is not recommended. It is very hard to learn because the cards are difficult to lift up. Desirable surfaces are padded and/or also have a surface with more texture such as cloth or felt.
  • Hours of repeated shuffling may result in stiffness or cramps in the hands or wrists.
