Here are some tips for baby proofing your home when you can't get to a store or are in an emergency. Can't afford pricey baby proof products but still want safety? Try these tips.

Things You'll Need:

  • household items can be used creatively used.
  1. Step 1

Has your baby started crawling and can't get to the store to buy the soft edges for tables? Here's a hint, use a soft towel, a plush blanket, or some soft cloth and wrap it around the bottom of the end table or the bottom of the piece of furniture in question. The softness should cushion a fall or hit to baby's head. I used blankets and towels and even a body pillow to surround all the bottom edges for a few months while the baby I take care of learned to crawl. It looked a little cluttered, but it saved me money and it worked.

This picture gives a rough idea of what I am talking about. The red blanket is tucked around the bottom of the table.

  2. Step 2

Baby starting to get into things like under computer desks and touching wires? Here's an idea, use something wide to place over the wires or in front of them. Baby can't get to it.

  3. Step 3

Has baby started reaching for those plug-ins? Need an emergency idea? Place a tall trash can in front of the plug in. It worked for me.

  4. Step 4

Here's another tip as a temporary substitute for a gate. If baby is beginning to climb stairs, place a chair sideways in front of the first step. If there is no chair available, use something wide.

  5. Step 5

Look around your home and try things out when a problems rises. You might think of something unique.

Tips & Warnings
  • Test it first. Watch when baby attempts to go forward and see if it works instead of assuming it'll work.
  • Use your head if it looks to dangerous to use a substitute. Safety is always first.
