Things You'll Need:
- rock climbing shoes
- a harness and a chalk bag is helpful
-
Step 1
The best place for someone to begin to start rock climbing is a indoor climbing gym. They will teach you basic safety techniques go over all the equipment and show you how to top rope with a belayer and belay device. Even though it is indoors, it is the basic knowledge you need to one day climb outdoors.
-
Step 2
One of the skills that are best learned on an indoor rock climbing wall is top roping. You will have two ends of rope dangling. You tie onto one end of the rope and the belayer will take up the slack from the other end by using the belaying device. When the person who is climbing gets to the top, the belayer will slowly release the belay device and lower the climber to the ground.
-
Step 3
Climbing indoors allows you to get use to holds and how to move up, down, and sideways around rock faces. All indoor rock climbing gyms have set up different routes along the rock walls that are varying levels of difficulty. Once you get more advanced, you can begin to start just using certain holds and going particular routes up the wall.
-
Step 4
Another good way to get familiar with the balance and movement involved in climbing is to "boulder." All you need for this activity are rock shoes and a chalk bag. The idea behind bouldering is to complete difficult moves on rock while staying near the ground. It is always a good idea to have a spotter or have a bouldering pad underneath you as your climbing.
-
Step 5
Once you start completing routes and doing complicated routes, try finding some experts to go climbing outdoors and start out top roping the same as you do in the gym.

on 11/3/2008 Great tips! I have been indoor rock climbing only once. I would love to do it again. And, when I do, I'll make certain to take a look at this article for reference! :) *****
