How to Get Over the Loss of a Pet

How to Get Over the Loss of a Pet thumbnail
For many, a pet is a member of the family.

For many, the death of a beloved pet can be as traumatic as losing a family member. Take steps to cope with the death and address the grief that you feel. Not everyone deals with death in the same way; give yourself time to heal on your terms.

Instructions

    • 1

Recognize the feelings experienced during the grieving process. Anger, guilt, depression and sadness are common emotions after the death of a loved one. If your pet was suffering from an ailment before it died, find comfort in knowing that your pet is now at peace.

    • 2

Talk to someone who has experienced the loss of a pet. If you don't know anyone who has lost a pet, look for a support group.

    • 3

Spend more time with loved ones. They may take your mind off of your loss and give you something to smile about.

    • 4

Know that time is your friend in this situation. As time passes, so will your feelings of deep grief. You will never forget your pet, but after a while you'll be able to smile when you think of moments you had together.

    • 5

After giving yourself time to grieve, consider getting another pet. While a new pet cannot replace the one that died, letting another pet into your home and your heart may fill some of the emptiness you feel.

A month ago I've lost my beloved dog Bella she was the light of my life. She was ill when it was given to me and I was told she would have only a few months to live. With time, love and caring she got better to the point I forgot she was ill, all of the sudden after 1 year and seven months together , she started to have ailments and it was too late. I'm not only crying for her loss but I feel awful thinking I could have done more for her. I tried not to put her through vet exams all the time as she has already suffred so much before I have adopted her and panicked. She suffered from heartworms, cushing desease and heart failure due to both. I believe I could have used more medications . I have a very, very very hard time coping. I loved her so so much.

I just had to put my sweet Shelby to sleep this past Wed. I cannot stop sobbing. I am a mess. I do not know what to do. I am so lost. I nursed her for two years. I knew it was time, but my heart is exploding. I just cannot stand this horrendous pain. My head hurts, and my nose and eyes make me look like I am doing drugs. I swear I have aged 10 years in three days. What do I do!!!!!!!!!
