A favicon (short for favorites icon), also known as a website icon, shortcut icon, URL icon, or bookmark icon is an icon associated with a particular website or web page

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A Website
  • Internet Connection
  • FTP Access
  1. Step 1

A favicon is a small, 16x16 image that is shown inside the browser's location bar and bookmark menu when your site is called up. It is a good way to brand your site and increase it's prominence in your visitor's bookmark menu.

  2. Step 2

Youu need to create a square image (about 96px by 96px)of what you would like your Favicon to be. It could be your logo, a letter of your logo an element of your logo.

  3. Step 3

Go to dynamic drive favicon generator and upload your image: http://tools.dynamicdrive.com/favicon/

  4. Step 4

Once the icon has been created, download and save it on your website's images directory.

  5. Step 5

Add the following line to you HTML default or index document and all the documents which you want to add the favicon to between the [HEAD] tag:

    [link rel="shortcut icon" href="PATHTOIMAGES/IMAGE.ico" /]

    - Replace the [ with a < and the ] with a >.
    - Replace the "PATHTOIMAGE" with your actual images directory.
    - Replace IMAGE.ico with the actual name you used to save your own icon.

  6. Step 6

Thats it, upload your icon to your website using an FTP client and the updated pages so you and everyone else can see the icon, when accesing your site and when bookmarking your site.

    Enjoy!

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure the icon file looks good before you upload it.
  • You can generate different ones and at the end choose the one you like.
  • Make sure you add the line of code between the HEAD tag of your HTML document.

on 11/24/2008 Wow! My favicon worked. I just gave you five stars. Thanks so much for this information!! You can see the result if you go to my website (www.mackeybooks.com) and add it to your bookmarks. I used the Dynamic Drive favicon generator to make my trowel logo into a favicon, just as you suggested. There was a short delay but the site warned me about that. Thanks again for great directions.
