Use Facebook for Internet Viral Marketing
Use Facebook for Internet Viral Marketing

Because of the inherent structure of Facebook and the way its different applications and components work, it is a phenomenal social site for Internet Viral Marketing.

Viral marketing refers to using available social networks to market a product, brand, or person by way of "viral processes", similar to the way a flu virus would pass from one person to another, multiplying exponentially with each "exposure" -- leading to an "epidemic".

Because of the popularity of Facebook and the way "news" spreads on the site, your note to someone about your new e-book can be seen in short time by hundreds of people.

So just how do we tap into the power of Facebook for Internet Viral Marketing?

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

First, post an update on your status to the "WALL", one of many areas on Facebook that lend themselves naturally to promoting yourself, your product, your new idea. Lets take a look at the "WALL".

When you post a statement on your Facebook wall, it is in the context of "this is what I am doing now". You can put anything here. It can be random, such as, "John is going Christmas shopping" -- Or it can be specific and loaded with info, "John just finished his e-book, (title and link here). Obviously for internet marketing you are trying to get the word out about your business, web site or product and so you would post on your wall about those things.

  2. Step 2

Step 2 is to really understand the explosive power of the Wall. The power of the wall is that anyone who is your friend will see what you have posted on your wall. But even more explosive is that any friend of your friend, who you may not even know, sees any comment that you make to your friend on their newsfeed.

  3. Step 3

Look at your Newfeed. This Facebook "NEWSFEED" is what I see when I first log in. This is the second piece of powerful viral capability of Facebook.

On the newsfeed I see what all my friends are doing. I also see all the comments that my friends', friends have said to them by way of "comment". Step 3, Make comments onto your friends status, including references to what you want to market. For instance, if I comment to Stacey directly on her wall about my blog, when her random friend logs in to her account, and her newsfeed comes up, she sees Stacey's status and my comment -- linked to my blog. Internet Viral Marketing at its finest. It's kind of like an old fashioned phone "party line"!

  4. Step 4

Make sure to Max Out your Facebook profile. Most people who sign in to Facebook, will sooner or later read your profile. People are nosy!

There are areas within the profile to list all kinds of information about yourself. List everything about your business or products here. List your website and the link so your friends can visit it. When you list your website or blog address, the link is "hot" and when someone clicks on it they will get taken to your site. (The Google spiders will also go to your site by way of these links)

  5. Step 5

Within your profile, express your passion for your product or idea. Talk about yourself and why you give your time to this blog or e-book. This is the ideal place to market your services and products -- don't forget to put in your links!

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't forget that you can post videos to Facebook. Your friends will view these as will their friends. Create a marketing video and put it on your Facebook site.
  • You can post "notes". Notes can contain more info that a wall post or comment -- you can write several paragraphs. Put in "snippets" of your blog post and then a link to read the rest.
  • Do not be obnoxious or spammy. That is counter-productive. This is a relationship site foremost; think how you would feel if your friend only ever talked to you about a product they wanted you to buy.
