The Chevy Corvette first rolled off the assembly line in 1953. The springs should be stock Corvette springs. In over 50 years of production the Chevy Corvette has undergone many redesigns and replacing the springs will vary slightly according to model year. These instructions use model year 2000 as an example, but are the basic steps for replacing the springs in any Chevy Corvette.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Replacement springs
  • Safety goggles
  • Floor jack and stands
  • Socket wrench and sockets
  • Box wrench
  • Adjustable crescent wrench
  • Lug wrench
  • Torque wrench
  • Spring compressor and associated tools
  1. Step 1

Raise the Corvette and block the wheels with jack stands.

  2. Step 2

Measure the height of the transverse spring stud to set the Corvette's trim height, before installing the compressor and its associated tools.

  3. Step 3

Remove the bolts and insulators which hold the spring on the suspension control ar, and take the spring and compressor tool off the Corvette.

  4. Step 4

Reinstall the new spring onto the lower control arm, along with the compressor. Return the removed parts and torque the bolts to manufacturer's specifications.

  5. Step 5

Adjust the height and reattach the retainers onto the bolts of the control arm and check the alignment.

  6. Step 6

Lower the Corvette and check all connectors and parts to be certain they have been returned to their original positions.

Tips & Warnings
  • Take the pressure off the springs before disassembling. This is potentially very dangerous as the springs carry a great deal of force which is expended when their restraints are released.
