The Chevy Corvette has a long history beginning in 1953 when it became GM's first sports car. Many changes have occured in the Corvette design throughout the car's generations, but one thing remains the same, a good muffler makes your car sound better. If you find the muffler has become noisy or just want to soup up the car more by adding a performance version, changing the muffler in your Corvette can be accomplished in about an hour.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Old blanket, a large piece of cardboard
  • Car jack (optional)
  • Spray penetrating lubricant
  • New muffler
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Hacksaw
  1. Step 1

Spread out an old blanket or a large piece of cardboard on the ground to lay on as you replace the muffler. You can place the rear tires on a car jack if desired, but it is not necessary. However, putting the car on a jack makes the replacement a little easier.

  2. Step 2

Purchase a new muffler. It must have a 2.25-inch center inlet/outlet, be 4 inches Thick X 9.75 inches wide and have a 13-inch case length. All Corvettes from 1958 to 2008 use the same aluminized muffler.

  3. Step 3

Look over the old muffler. Spray the fasteners generously with a penetrating lubricant before you loosen them. The penetrating lubricant will help you to remove the screws and bolts with ease.

  4. Step 4

Loosen the bolts at the bottom of the muffler strap, letting the muffler hang. Using a hacksaw, saw the stock muffler completely off of the pipe, leaving 1 inch to 1 1/2 inches of straight pipe at the muffler inlet.

  5. Step 5

Put the muffler into place under the vehicle. Make sure the muffler inlet slips over the exhaust pipe with ease. Straighten the muffler over the pipe and then tighten the muffler clamp on the muffler inlet using a flathead screwdriver.

  6. Step 6

Start the vehicle, carefully inspecting the muffler for leaks and loud sounds. If there are loud sounds or leaks, you will need to tighten the bolts more. However, the clamps should be loose enough to allow the muffler to move a little with the movement of the car.

Tips & Warnings
  • Write down the date and mileage of the car when you replace the muffler. Keep this information with the muffler warranty.
